Highlights from the 2023 DEI Action Plan

Objective 1

Build Sustainable Infrastructure for DEI

  • Assistant Dean expanded role to include DEI oversight.
  • Faculty Fellow for Culture & Inclusion three-year appointment.
  • Raised $22,500 from corporate sponsors and launched a crowdfunding initiative for Multicultural Business Program.
  • Developed and launched new Orfalea Study Abroad Grant to award $30K for students with high financial need.
  • Established DEI Student Action Committee and included DEI Leads in club charters, with quarterly meetings through BUS Council, including DEI Toolkit with various resources.
  • Developed three new DEI awards at $2,000 each (Innovation, Allyship, & Instruction) for Faculty & Staff connected to DEI Action Plan.

Objective 2

Recruit, Retain, and Develop an Inclusive and Diverse Community

  • Ongoing assessment of faculty and staff sense of belonging launched in Spring 2023. Spring 2024 re-assessment to gauge progress and drive new community-based initiatives.
  • Initiated student focus groups to understand and address student concerns, including senior exit interviews with college leadership to improve the student experience.
  • Improved college tours by incorporating accessible routes and offering Spanish-speaking tours led by Ambassadors.
  • Enhanced onboarding for new faculty and staff. Advisors engaged in professional development, including attendance at the National Association on Race & Ethnicity (NCORE) DEI 2024 annual conference, completion of Cornell’s DEI Certification (35 hours).

Objective 3

Eliminate Gaps in Graduation Rates and Career Outcomes

  • Two new academic advisors dedicated to supporting underrepresented students were hired in July 2023.
  • Developed process with Orfalea Retention Specialist to identify and proactively support Underrepresented students, aiming to close the graduation rate gap.
  • Student industry pathways and DEI Career Opportunities resource developed to enhance career and internship options for students.
  • Multicultural Business Program hosted annual conference on DEI in May 2024, with over 300 students in attendance.
