Finance senior Alexandra Joelson (2023) quickly rose to become an equity index trader in Philadelphia. We asked her to describe her career path and the formula for her speedy rise in a male-dominated field. Below is her reply in her own words:

As a junior at Cal Poly, I chose to concentrate in financial management — a decision that has shaped the trajectory of my career ever since. My passion for finance was ignited through my participation in the CFA Institute Research Challenge at Cal Poly, where I had the privilege of leading our team to the Americas Regional Semi-Finals as captain. This experience solidified my commitment to the field and inspired me to begin the CFA exam journey immediately thereafter.

During my internship with John Hancock Financial on the National Accounts team, I explored various career paths within finance. When the opportunity arose, I relocated to the East Coast to be closer to the heart of the financial industry. I began my professional career in Vanguard’s rotational program (Investment Management Development Program) within the Investment Management Group, gaining exposure to three distinct teams. I recently launched out of the program early to join the equity index trading desk as a full-time trader.

I’m a strong advocate for rotational programs, especially for recent graduates, as they offer invaluable insight into different career paths before making a long-term commitment. Experiencing both the teams you thrive on and those that may not be the right fit is equally important! My approach has always been to stay curious, absorb as much as possible, and continuously seek opportunities to learn and grow.

Having recently passed the CFA Level III exam, I look forward to becoming a charter holder in the coming months as I complete the required work experience. I’m enjoying life in Philadelphia and appreciate the proximity to New York City for both professional and personal enrichment.

My biggest piece of advice: Be a sponge — absorb everything you can, embrace every opportunity for growth, and give your full effort to set yourself up for long-term success. When it comes to the CFA exams, approach them with a clear plan and unwavering commitment. This journey requires sacrifice, discipline, and a strong sense of accountability. It’s equally important to maintain balance in your personal life throughout the process. The rewards are well worth the effort.
