German Serna earned both his master’s degree in advanced manufacturing systems and technology and his doctorate in engineering from the University of Liverpool in the UK. At Cal Poly, where he is a full-time lecturer, he teaches a range of topics, including project organization and management, quality engineering, financial decisions for engineers and engineering economics.

His research interests focus on applied industry projects in supply chain management, smart technologies (Industry 4.0) and efficiency (Lean Six Sigma) initiatives. Serna previously worked as an associate professor in Mexico for ten years, teaching courses in industrial engineering and business while conducting research on operation management. 

Prior to entering academia, he worked for a decade in manufacturing organizations in areas related to production and manufacturing systems, quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives. His industry experience includes working for Pemex, Mexico’s state-owned natural petroleum company, as an advisor to the board of directors for four years at the Mexico City headquarters.
