About the MSQE program
Better Decisions through Economic Analysis.
The MS in Quantitative Economics (MSQE) delivers structured thinking about empirical problems and incentives. The program integrates econometrics, machine learning and AI, causal inference, decision analysis, and hands-on analysis of real-world data, all guided by economic theory. This ten-month, full-time program prepares students for data-driven careers or PhD study. Small classes, expert faculty, and Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing approach provide close mentorship and practical training in economics-based analytics and consulting. Graduates secure roles as economists, consultants, data analysts, and data scientists in finance, tech, government, consulting, academia, and other public and private organizations.
Industry-Aligned Curriculum
The MS in Quantitative Economics curriculum emphasizes a comprehensive analytical toolkit rooted in economic theory, focusing on: (1) identifying cause-and-effect relationships in real-world data, (2) evaluating the economic impact of organizational decisions, and (3) assessing the risk-adjusted optimality of those decisions.
We developed and refined the curriculum in consultation with leading economists, consultants, and data scientists from Amazon, Google, OnPoint Analytics, Spotify, DevTech, Streamlit, and Zillow to ensure alignment with real-world industry needs.
Faculty Support from Day One
Students begin working with faculty on empirical research projects early in the program, gaining firsthand experience with the practical power of their training.
Through a unique collaboration with Cal Poly’s Digital Transformation Hub, powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), students engage with public and international organizations like The World Bank on real-world challenges. These projects allow students to build skills using proprietary datasets while contributing to global development efforts and addressing issues central to each organization’s mission.
excellent career paths
MSQE graduates pursue successful careers across diverse industries, launching careers in high-demand fields such as finance, consulting, analytics, research, government, healthcare, and tech, with employers including J.P. Morgan, Booz Allen Hamilton, KPMG, EY, Oracle, Uber, FEMA, and FERC. The program’s emphasis on rigorous quantitative analysis and critical thinking equips students for rapid career growth and leadership roles. Graduates are also well-prepared for doctoral study at top PhD programs in Economics and related fields.
Our active and supportive Cal Poly MSQE alumni network, with over 100 members on LinkedIn, is a valuable resource.
